Depression is not sadness. You can explain sadness. Depression is the absence — of color, of wanting, of the sense that anything is pointing in a direction. It's functioning without feeling what functioning usually feels like. Going through the motions of a life that should mean something and observing from a slight distance that it doesn't seem to be landing.
The social expectation of depression is that it's visible. That it stops you. But a lot of people carry depression invisibly — performing fine while experiencing something fundamentally different internally.
