who you are when no one's watching

// 3 voices in the void

The presented self and the interior self diverge over time. You become practiced at the version that moves through the world — consistent, legible, predictable in the ways that relationships and institutions require. The version underneath accumulates contradictions: desires that don't fit the narrative, changes that haven't been officially registered anywhere, parts of yourself that you've kept separate from the context that knows your name.

By the time most people notice the gap, it has been growing for years.

This thread is for the interior version — the one that exists before the presentation begins. No audience to maintain a consistent self for. No obligation to be the person you've told people you are. Just the honest account of who you are when no one is watching.

I grew up being the responsible one. Now I resent everyone who got to be the mess.

I have a different laugh for different people. I'm not sure I know my real one anymore.

I perform competence so well that people are shocked when I struggle. I've become the performance.
